As a tech company with a presence in over 15+ markets nationwide, a lot of our work happens online—which is great for everyday business operations. However, no amount of Slack messages or Zoom calls can create the connection—dare we say the magic—that occurs when we all come together in person. That’s why we coordinate a companywide team retreat twice a year.
Instead of a normal holiday party, we prefer to kick off each new year with Ignite—a multi-day retreat full of team bonding, education, inspiration, and yes…a party for the books! (We’re in the hospitality business, after all.) We hit the jackpot with 2022’s casino-themed Ignite.
The focus of this year’s event was on relationships. At the start of 2021, Qwick operated with only 19 employees. One year later, in January of 2022, that number rose to 169 employees (with 93 of those being full-time). With a team that has grown 789% in 12 months, there was no shortage of new people to meet, friendships to be formed, stories to be told, and memories to be created. As always, we got to work—err, play. Watch the video below and you can be the judge!
Pretty neat, huh? Read on for the details of what made this year’s Ignite so special.
Day 1 Highlights:
Qwick Co-Founder and CEO, Jamie Baxter, kicked off Ignite with a touching recap of where we’ve been as a company and where we’re going. He set the energy for the event by sharing our 2022 goals and empowered us to place the bets needed to get there. No pun intended. 😉
We all know the best connections are formed over a shared meal, so there was no shortage of great food—and even better company—throughout Ignite.
Employees were treated to a special surprise Monday afternoon when Jamie introduced two Qwick investors to the stage, and recreated a mock investor meeting. It’s certainly not every day you get to be a part of a meeting like that, and it was a great representation of the transparency that exists at Qwick.
After lots of laughs and learning, the team headed to Octane Raceway for an evening filled with fun and games (literally).
Day 2 Highlights:
Day two of Ignite held even more surprises, including panel discussions that featured current Qwick Professionals and Business Partners. These sessions were packed with personal testimonies that reminded us why we do the work that we do, and how important Qwick is to the end consumers on both sides of our marketplace.
Additional topics for the day included a presentation on the rollout of the new Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging program at Qwick, and the unveiling of some incredible new benefits for Qwick employees. (Check out our Careers page to learn more!)
The surprises didn’t stop there; employees learned that they’d need to pack their bags for the next Qwick retreat—Qwick Camp ‘22 will be held in Chicago this summer!
We ended the day with a courtyard happy hour complete with smoking cocktails and the biggest charcuterie spread we’d ever laid eyes on.
Day 3 Highlights:
There were no presentations or panels on the final day of Ignite. Instead, we gathered outdoors for a “Casino Heist” field day!
Everyone divided into teams and competed in four different field day style events, including a good old fashioned game of tug-of-war and various obstacle courses. The field day antics really brought out the competitive nature of the team—something Qwick employees have a lot of.
After cheering on our field day champions, it was time to head home to get ready for the night’s festivities—the Casino Royale Ignite party!
When guests arrived at the event venue that night dressed in their black tie best, the entire space had been transformed into a swanky Vegas casino.
A jazzy, 10-person live band serenaded guests under the dazzling light of the disco ball, while folks enjoyed Casino games like blackjack, craps, and roulette.
Just when attendees thought the night was over, a whole new room opened up for a Qwick-hosted after-party where guests enjoyed an all-you-can-eat floating french fry bar and sang karaoke into the night.
All in all, Ignite was a monumental three days of relationship building and a fantastic celebration of the culture that makes Qwick the amazing place to work that it is. An experience of this scale takes incredible planning, dedication, and hard work to pull off, and we can’t thank our team and partners enough for making this dream a reality.
