Accepting a shift and showing up unfamiliar with the team can be overwhelming no matter how many times you’ve done it before. Between learning names, team dynamic, and company expectations, there is plenty to occupy your attention. But, making impressions qwickly can mean success for a healthy hustle. That’s why we’ve put together a list of 5 simple things to keep in mind to gain trust on your first shift with a new business.
Show Up Early
One of the most natural things you can do but may carry the most impact is giving yourself enough time to prepare for your shift. When planning your drive to your shift, plan for the worst and hope for the best. Car accidents, traffic, and hard-to-find parking spots happen all the time. Save yourself some stress by leaving early enough that none of those could make you late. Arrive to work around 5 minutes early feeling fresh and ready for whatever the shift might hold. Show the manager on duty, as well as the other members of their staff, that you are eager to succeed.
Make Impressions With Management
A simple ‘thank you’ goes a long way. At the earliest chance, it is a great idea to thank the manager on duty for the opportunity that they have provided. Keep the communication and dialogue open while affirming that you are excited to be there. Any opportunity to help out (even if it’s not part of your shift detail) is something that really stands out to management. Be a team player, and you’re bound to be requested back for more shifts.
Step up and Pitch in
Fast-tracking your way to earning trust on the team can happen multiple ways, but one that we all appreciate is when other step up to help out. Even if it’s not in your proper shift duties (like helping carrying produce in), helping out management when they need it is a surefire way to gain trust. Don’t neglect your actual duties on the shift, of course, but be aware of your surroundings and when help is needed. The less you need to be told what to do, the better.
Showcase Your Skills With Confidence
You were accepted to the Qwick platform, and brought into your shift, for a reason. You know how to do the job well, so let people see that! Show up to your shift ready to impress.
Have a Positive Attitude
One of the most essential things that you can do as a Professional on a shift is carry a positive attitude and approach. Be kind, have a great attitude, and treat everyone with respect. A happy disposition will allow for managers and employees to find you approachable and therefore, easier to get to know and trust. It enhances the experience for everyone, and even moreso if you are in a customer-facing position.
It can be nerve-racking to show up to a new shift with a new business, surrounded by people that you don’t know. But when you show up mentally prepared and with the attitude to do well and help people out, we’re confident you’ll have a great shift!
